Three Sisters Collection
Three Sisters Collection
The Three Sisters companion plants refer to corn, squash, and beans, which were traditionally planted together in many Native American communities. Each plant helps support and nurture the other- Corn provides a sturdy stalk for upwardly reaching bean tendrils, squash provides shade and ground cover to protect the soil and prevent moisture loss, while beans fix nitrogen into the soil for the heavy feeding corn and for the squash. A lovely trio to grow harmoniously in your garden. Typically, flint or flour varieties of corn are preferred because they are harvested at the end of the summer. Winter squash varieties are best because they grow on sprawling vines and produce a harder rind for protection and for keeping over winter. Use pole bean varieties to maximize space and to grow up the corn stalks.
