Spring is Here - Happy Spring Equinox

While here in Colorado we have been getting hammered with snow storm after snow storm - including record breaking avalanches in the Central Mountains and a crazy “bombcyclone” that hit Denver last week, believe it or not, spring is officially here, and we have a sunny, beautiful day to prove it.

Have you started your seeds yet? If not, today is the day!!

A general rule of thumb is to start your tomato and pepper seeds by March 20th so they are mature enough and ready to be transplanted outdoors after the last freeze has passed (generally after Mother’s Day). If you can’t get seeds started today, get them going by the end of this month at the VERY latest!

If you have a cold frame, remay cover, hoop house etc. for season extension in the fall, you have a bit more leeway.

Have you ordered your seeds yet? If not, don’t delay and order them asap.

Not sure what to order? We have a wide selection of collections to do the thinking/planning work for you.

Our Seed Buckets are a great item and will provide you with a wide variety and selection to get your garden started without overthinking what to order.

Seed Starting Tools

We are working on some fun tutorial videos for folks looking for some assistance with starting from seed.

We had so much fun with our amazingly creative and talented friend Zach who helped us put together a professional, short video for all of our seed friends at the studio this week.

Stay tuned next week for the final product!

Tooling Up for Seed Starting:

While we don’t want to promote any specific brands/stores etc. We thought we’d share a word or two about potential tools to help boost your seed starting efforts. Especially for those of you running a bit behind this season.

  • Soil - you want the soil to be light and aerated.

    • So if the soil you are working with is compacted, you may want to add vermiculite or perlite to lighten up the soil so your baby seedlings can easily push through! You should be able to find this easily at any garden center or nursery.

  • Light - until seeds germinate, keep them dark/partially covered. Once they sprout, you can treat them like any other plant and give them direct light in order for them to grow.

    • If they don’t receive enough light, they will get leggy and stretch out searching for adequate light. If you want to ensure strong, vigorous seedlings, you may want to invest in an overhead light system.

  • Temperature Consistency - around 60 degrees

    • Warming mats - if you are having difficulty with germination…first, be patient! Sometimes germination can take up to a week or two. However, if your seed flats are in an area with fluctuating temperatures, you may want to hedge your bets and pick up a seed starting heating mat. You can find these at most garden centers or online. Surprisingly, they are fairly inexpensive and durable!

Seed Swap at the North Fork Valley Seed to Seed Program in Hotchkiss, CO

Seeds Trust Sojourns

We had a great time at last month’s 2nd Bi-Annual Mountain West Seed Summit in Santa Fe, New Mexico. What a convergence of inspiring and amazing people in one magical place!

On the Hunt for New Growers - In early March, Alisha ventured out on her own to visit the North Fork Valley Seed to Seed Program in Hotchkiss, CO. March is our busiest season, so Julia stayed in Denver to take care of seed orders, while Alisha braved the avalanche ridden highways (360+ in 7 days!! We need the moisture but dang.)

It was so fabulous to see such interest in learning how to grow for seed from gardeners and growers on the Colorado Western Slope. We made some great connections and are excited to start fostering new Seeds Trust growers in Colorado.

We are working on a bunch of new website content, including blog posts with more details about these sorts of seed adventures and informational/educational content.

Stay tuned next week when things go live!
